I look again and again at both the Taurus and the Volvo wagons. Both look much better than a tall SUV or minivan for transporting kayaks. I think the biggest single factor in carrying kayaks safely and dealing with winds is having good racks. On the Volvo you can use gutter mounts and space them a mile apart; perfect. On the Taurus I'd want to see if Thule or Yakima makes a kit that doesn't mount to the existing rack with its 100 pound limit.
I currently carry my kayaks (as many as three at a time) on my Honda Accord with Thule racks (with illegally wide cross bars). As far as wind goes there are two situations that I watch out for: 1) high natural winds-You'll know its a windy day long before you start to feel the effects on your kayaks. 2) Tractor trailers- when they start going fast they displace enough air to bounce everything around. I start getting leery when their speed gets above 70, either passing me or coming the other way on a narrow 2-lane. When I see one coming, I'll try to move to the other side of my lane, or even onto the shoulder to gain a little space.
What about small pickup trucks, like the Ford Ranger with the stretched cab?
