: I'm routing 1/4" strips of wood---rounding off the edge and when i get
: to the end of the strip, the router takes a bigger gouge out of the
: strip..seems like when the piece of wood comes off of the fence and is
: only between the router bit and the feather board. it then gets pulled
: into the bit more than the previous part of the strip.
: i've tried back routing and get the same result-i must be setting this up
: wrong.
: what's up with that?
You need a zero clearance fence for the router bits to come through.
If you have a fence with a larger gap on either side of your cutter, the featherboard
will push the strip end deeper into the cutter and you'll have the problem you discribe.
Mark the current placement of the fence relative to the correct depth of cut for your strips
on the adjustment shafts of the router fence, before you change the set-up.
To make a zero clearance fence screw a new piece of solid wood/plywood on your
router fence, set in front of the cutter's path. Then turn the router on and CAREFULLY
and SLOWLY pull the wood into the router bits until they cut through the fence front.
Continue to push the cutter through the new fence until you move just past the depth needed.
Then move the fence back to the correct depth-of-cut for the strips and lock-down the fence.
This should nearly eliminate the snipe problem.
All the best,
