I found my strongback at the local scrapyard.
It is one post of a warehouse shelf section. Exactly 17' long. I cut some off, and inserted a few feet of 2x4 in each end to hold the bow/stern sections. I just tapered the 2x4 to fit inside the profile.

For starters, it looked like the perfect strongback to me, but the U-profile is slightly "open" i.e. not at straight angles at one end, making alignement of the forms a bit confusing, and it tended to twist lengthwise if it was not held properly in place on the stands. The first strips too care of that, though.

It has one great advantage : It is very easy to clear the porch for a BBQ, every now and then, without ruining the setup :-)
