Depending what part of the country you're in you can get clear WRC for under $2/bf. Old growth can translate to different attributes in the wood: the old growth is sometimes darker in color and has a tighter grain pattern. I would compare what else is in the area...

I think most of us are using kiln dried cedar. I was in Lumberjack country a week ago (climbing one of the volcanoes here in Washington State) and we drove by a large kiln drying operation. That would be the default treatment for cedar decking/siding/fencing - which is what WRC is often sold as. Kiln dried is okay; what you don't want is wood that has dried-out from sitting around your garage for years on end. Depending on your storage situation, you might purchase the wood just so you can experiment with air-drying to see what you get.
