I should perhaps have mentioned that my reclaimed wood is varnished one side,
so in the situation I mentioned, it is drying out through the thickness -
inevitably one side gets much drier than the other at first. Having now
seen this effect once, I'll take off the varnish before bringing damp boards
into the shop. Although given what I have to do before I can start the next
boat, I'll probably find I'm ripping strips in the summer and the boards
can be ripped without bringing them into a heated shop first. It certainly
isn't possible to rip them until they come back straight !!!
