As far as a "real need" the only reason is to get the construction process inside. Nebraska has cold wet winters. Given that some people do build these outside or under carports I have not decided yet if that is good enough reason to cut a perfictly good boat into 2 or 3 peices.

I have not built a kayak yet, but in my reading I got the impression that bulkheads went in before the deck was attached to the hull. Is that sometimes the case or do you normaly insert the bulkheads throught the finished cockpit.

My reason for asking is that it seams like it would be easyer to put in the double bulkhead with all required spacers, dowles, and bolts before attaching the deck. Then the last foot or so of epoxi and glass between the deck and the bulkhead could be added through the hatches/cockput. This may also let you put in pilot holes from the inside.
