: Driving home from a week in the Queen Charlottes ( see trip board) we found
: that a hatch cover was missing . the bow hatch of a Great Auk. I doubt
: that it will ever be found and I'm not about to re trace the journey of 17
: hrs...
: Lesson learned --- always hook up a tether of some sort.!!
: So now a new one must be made. Hard to make the strips look like the old ones
: so I think I'll use similar but different wood and out line the outer edge
: of the new hatch with a contrasting thin border. ??
: Any body have any ideas to make a new hatch that would look good.??
My condolences Terry. I put a border on one of my hatches. I started with steam bending but then quickly realized miters were the way to go. I did it basically the same way you would make an odd-shaped picture frame. See www.ChipSandresky.com/cedarstrip/images/hatches7.jpg There are two miters at each corner in order to make them a more gradual curve.
... the most defiant move you could make would be to do the hatch as a solid background color with an elaborate inlayed picture of some sort. Think of it as an opportunity
