Hi Chip - Yep homemade bicycle cart too. The rib mortices are fine.
Would you glass just the rib mortice area or the whole gunnel ? If you can get red cedar in 7/8" thickness then I'd use that . Others have used 3/4" red cedar gunnels without apparent problems - as did I once and it was barely acceptable to my way of thinking.
Yellow cedar is a nice kayak frame wood but fir , pine , spruce are all good too. I use yellow cedar as it is available nearby.
