: For those of you paying attention, it is safe to assume I'm waffling as to
: whether the next boat is strip or S&G. As september is closing soon, I
: need to get after that decision. To that end: I need to rip a bunch of
: strips. Common wisdom is a nice big table saw. Ain't got one. I'm by no
: means opposed to buying tools, but that purchase would cost too much in
: terms of physical space. I've been less than impressed by the available
: rentals, so I don't think I'll be seeing one of those for this task.
: Other options are a contractors' saw (benchtop table saw) or getting creative
: with my circular saw and some lumber. I'm not particularly confident in
: setting up good extensions for the contractors' saw, and the circular saw
: thing seems like a good way to a bad result. I looked at a small bandsaw,
: but I figure that would rip slow and wavy. Anyone with experience on
: alternate ripping approaches care to chime in? Thanks.
I too thought about ripping my own strips. But then I started pricing out 20' cedar boards. It was cheaper for me to order my strips from classic boat kits. And if you want the strips milled with cove and beads, it doesn't cost anything more. You can get the strips in almost any length you want, and shipping isn't that much. Maybe I did take the easier way out, but I didn't have to worry about milling the strips and the outlay for a new tool.
