No useful hints of the epoxy, but as far as starting out, I'd look into classes, clubs, or kayaker friends as some others have recommended.
I'm a reader so I would also recommend any of the following books as a good orientation: 'The Complete Book of Sea Kayaking' by Derek Hutchinson, 'The Essential Sea Kayaker' by David Seidman, and 'The Costal Kayaker's Manual' by Randel Washburne.

I would also recommend joining the Paddlewise mailing list (http://www.paddlewise.net/signup.html) and asking your skills question there as well.
