: Rob,
: I didn't see your post until today or I would have responded earlier. If you
: hadn't responded directly based on my post, I probably wouldn't be responding
: at all. However....
: Your comments seem to be mostly centered on using a circular saw setup as a
: table saw on some type of mount. I know nothing about that method. In my
: post,
: and in the attached pic, I am using a circular saw in the upright manner as
: it
: was designed to be used, and have access to all safety features available to
: this type of saw.
: I've built numerous boats (8) using this method, so my post isn't theoretical
: as are your statements. Have you ever ripped any strips with a circular saw ?
: I've certainly ripped many strips with a table saw.
: I've never found using a circular saw as illustrated any more dangerous than
: any other normal circular saw usage. Perhaps you didn't take the time to
: actually read my post before going off on your tangent. I've never cut the
: power cord, tripped over anything, or been off balance in the 10 years I
: ripped
: strips this way. By the way, my name's not Bill.
: Tom
Sorry about calling you Bill.
Tom, I have used the method you discribe as well as mounting a saw under a table.
The times I've made long rips with a circular saw, I have not found it easy to keep the cut
accurate, because you must walk down the board and keep the saw cord out from under your
feet and from getting caught or hung-up on something.
In the right hands with the right set-up they work. I have no argument with you on that.
I'm not suggesting what you are doing is wrong for you.
But when we talk here in this public forum about using these methods, they appear to be
standard working proceedure, equally safe and to produce the same results as using a table saw.
They are not going to be safe or produce conisistant results in the hands of novice woodworkers
with no guidence and unequal levels of experience in setting-up tools and milling wood.
I sell plans that discribe how to set-up a table saw to safely cut strips and produce accurate
and consistant cuts.
I know I would not be comfortable from a safety or legal standpoint in advocating your strip
cutting method or the "mount the saw under the table" routine, to novice woodworkers.
All the best,
Rob Macks
