There is really no way to get rid of ripples and whitening without sanding away the glass. You could just sand locally to the problem and then patch in glass over the sanded areas. This will tend to leave a halo around the perimeter of where you have sanded into the wood. If you can sand enough to get rid of the glass, but not into the wood, you may avoid the halo. Otherwise it might require sanding the whole thing it you want absolutely no sign of any problem. Personally I would just sand locally and learn to accept the slight sign of a repair. You will probably be the only one to notice.
