: There is really no way to get rid of ripples and whitening without sanding
: away the glass. You could just sand locally to the problem and then patch
: in glass over the sanded areas. This will tend to leave a halo around the
: perimeter of where you have sanded into the wood. If you can sand enough
: to get rid of the glass, but not into the wood, you may avoid the halo.
: Otherwise it might require sanding the whole thing it you want absolutely
: no sign of any problem. Personally I would just sand locally and learn to
: accept the slight sign of a repair. You will probably be the only one to
: notice.
The wood shrank and the epoxy and glass cloth did not creating internal stresses. Those built up stresses only releaved where the wood cracked or the glass buckled. I fear the remaing stress my continue to cause local failures especially when the kayak flexes during use.
I would strip all of the glasss off. Use a heat gun and a putty knife to start a corner of the cloth then pull frimly (not hard) with pliers while heating the cloth just ahead of the separation line with the heat gun. It will strip off fairly easily.
Ouch, a big step back. That really hurts. Who would da thought?
