Given the numerous issues you'd be dealing with trying to make this $900 boat look as sweet as it paddles, I'm guessing you'd be better off starting from scratch with a new $700 Pygmy kit. No doubt you could do the work, but I'm not sure you'd be saving much time or money in the process, and you'd still be ending up needing to paint over most of the okume (even on the deck, if the original compass mount gets moved as you'd like).

Retrofitting and refinishing this one sounds like a heck of a lot of work to me - fraught with a lot of uncertainty and chance - if what you're after is a fairly showy wood boat. If you buy it, I'd suggest a quick patch-up and just enjoy it pretty much as-is. Otherwise, start fresh with a new kit, build and modify as you need, and get a great-looking and performing boat in reward for your time.
