Absolutely build your own!
I just started an 18' Merganser II from Eric Schade at Shearwater and I highly recommend it. Good instructions, plenty of epoxy, and the freedom to be a little creative and be proud of your work rather than patching up someone elses mess. I also agree with the above sentiments that somebody was a little lax in their attention to detail while building, and you should not inherit somebody else's FUBAR's.
