Below is a picture of a kayak that we built last week using a new vacuum infusion process. The mold is sprayed with a gel coat and cured over night. The cloth is layed in dry with a honey comb core on the inside of the laminate that lets resin flow through it. Two vacuum ports are placed in the center at the sheer line and input hoses at the ends with buckets of resin.

The whole lay up is bagged and when a vacuum is applied the resen flows from the buckets on the end and wets out the laminate. With this process we can build a boat in two days and for 1/4 the cost of pre-preg hand lay-up.

The picture below shows the hull and deck being bonded. After all those years of rolling out tape on the inside of strippers I am relieved to just be edge joining these boats. You still use lots of tape to get the hull and deck to line up. Since these are flat water racers I suspect that they don't get the same forces of an ocean kayak but the owner has never had a boat fail in 25 years of making them with edge bonding.
