Well, based on your description, it sounds like a colossal waste of $900. Also, unless you're an experienced builder, you might not be able to spot more serious problems, beyond what you've described. You could build one for less money in 50-60 hours and you'll know you're doing it right. I'll bet you spend that much time just fixing the problems on this boat, not to mention the expense of extra materials. Mis-aligned footpeg rails? Partial bulkheads? I wouldn't sit in a boat that was in the condition that you described.

Put another way, if you had "commissioned" someone to build you this boat, would you have accepted delivery of it with the poor workmanship you've described?

Finally, you're talking about putting your life, literally, in the hands of another builder who's work you already identified as poor. I really understand the attraction of purchasing a wood kayak. They're really great. How about this idea...

Let us know where you live. Perhaps there's a member of this forum that lives close to you that could help you with a second opinion. Or better yet, has a boat they might be able to sell to you that's in far better condition.
