Oh here goes, the Coho is a big boat, if you're a good weight in the AT14 then the Coho will feel big for day paddling. I made one for a 155lb 5'6" friend and he was swimming in it. I'm pushing 200lbs and the Coho feels like it needs that weight with plenty of reserve for 80lbs of stuff. That doesn't mean it paddles like a big boat, it's efficient and responsive enough for a touring kayak.
There is absolutely no similarity between it and the WR18 other than number of hull panels. The WR18 has less volume ,is narrower and will weigh about 4lbs more, how a boat touches the water is different than the amount of air it contains so you really have to take with a grain of salt descriptions that say high/med/low volume with regards to how it handles on the water. I didn't get the WR18 into any waves or wind but all I could tell was that the pivot point for different turns and degrees of lean felt good. I don't recall relative turning characteristics but I think the WR18 is more maneuverable. What it's like in waves I have absolutely no idea. CLC has a history of introducing and retiring models due to a very long feedback loop as to the efficacy of a design, Yare to Northbays to Paxs for example , handling in wind/waves is a primary aspect of that feedback. The only thing I'd wonder about with the WR18 is the distribution of volume in the ends and how it affects handling in waves, while sitting in the cockpit it feels like the bow is descending into the water,,that's probably 1/2 perspective from the nature of the one piece bent deck and the actual fact that the bow isn't very high off the water. The spread sheer clamp construction method and one piece deck confines the shape of the hull near the ends in ways that hulls built just from 4mm aren't similarly constrained.
My curiosity about it's handling in waves comes from the fact that the cockpit is further forward than in the WR180,,,which says to me there's a bigger lever pushing the bow down everything else being equal. There are somethings one can extrapolate from with flat water paddling demos but you really don't know how much something "matters" until you get it in those conditions that matter to you.
: Has anyone paddled both a Coho and a WR18? They look like twins with the
: exception of the decks. Does the WR18 have more foot room? Currently I
: paddle an Artic Tern 14, and my size 10 feet must be duck-footed to fit,
: which maybe causing considerable pain--I couldn't imagine sitting in the
: AT14 for more than 2 hours. For my 2nd S&G, I'd like to build an medium+
: volume boat (expedition?) for comfortable overnighters or 4+ hours of
: paddling. Any comments would be appreciated.
