In Response To: Strip: Form Alignment Tips? (Ed Perrault)

: The laundry room project has advanced to the point where the boss has given
: me permission to start work on the kayak.

: I'm about to position the forms on a box beam I built (following the advice
: in Nick's book). Does anyone have any helpfull techniques for both
: aligning them accurately and minimizing my inevitable frustration?

: thanks, EdP

hold a stringline on various sides of yr strongback to estimate the deviations if any-twist and bow, then cut holes in the forms larger than the strongback size to this deviation so you can move the forms around to account for this and other inaccuracies. (i use 1/8" to 3/16" all around, but that's my building)

cut 1/2in holes (add bullseye 1st) in each form say 8"-10" apart(as far as possible) in same location in all forms and run stringline thru - keep in place during whole bldg process so can always check (saved my ass 2x, uncertain abt another, but at least i know what's coming). just have to check twist betw 1st and last holed form with clamped sticks, set those two first, then all others a snap.

use some type of loosenable form holding system so can easily move/tap form around to align without having to renail/rescrew in same or diff. hole etc etc. wingnuts in one of larger form or larger bracket holes may be easiest, simplest and best.
