: What, if any, is the difference of a random orbital sander and an oribital
: sander? Will they both do a decent job for sanding a kayak?

The orbital sander is very good and will work well for what you need.
The random orbital is extremely good. It cuts much faster and you can use lesser grits of paper to accomplish the same job. It has an orbit within and orbit. It's the Earth spinning and revolving around the Sun ( an exaduration of course, but you get the idea )
You can use either tool and get more than satisfactory work. It's all a matter of a little time saved, that costs you a few extra $$$'s.
A matter of taste, and expense account flexibility.
Most folks will spend the extra couple of $$$'s and get the ROS. If you do much woodworking or plan to ( like making your 3rd or 4th boat ) in the future you will realize the savings in no time.
But, that said, the Orbital will do a fine job... If $$$'s are tight, don't be afraid to settle for the lesser tool... Try to get a good brand and stay away from the Cheapies... Look for something around 14,000 Rpm. or Orbits per minute and higher. Speed helps to make a smoother surface without swirls.
