Few days ago I was struggling with whether to buy a badly built Arctic Tern and try to fix it up. You all convinced me to build my own, so now I am struggling with what boat to build. I am 5' 11", 210lbs, 10.5 shoe size. I paddled the Arctic Tern on a flatwater river with mild current, and quickly appreciated the strong tracking, and what I considered to be good responsiveness to leaned turns.
So, I think I want to go towards a hard chine Greenland style hull.
What I did not like about the Tern was the high coaming at the back, and the lack of thigh braces. I did not try a roll in the river, but I think the peaked coaming back would interfere badly with layback.
I have not paddled any other wooden boats. My main plastic boat is a stock Necky Eskia, which fits me pretty darn well in the cockpit. Layback is pretty easy in that boat with the recessed coaming and low backband. I would guess I am an "intermediate" paddler. I've never had skills assessed by an instructor, but I reckon I'd pass most of a BCU 3-star assessment. I'm wanting to build a boat that will allow me to more easily further my skills. I noticed that a lot of the strokes and what not just seemed more effective in the Tern. Much of my paddling is currently in sheltered bays and rivers, but I had the chance this summer to launch through the surf with an instructor and paddle offshore some. I really dug that, and REALLY liked catching some waves, so I'd like a boat with good rough water and surf handling so that I can expand my horizons.
I am considering the Tern and the Merganser 17 on the low price end at the moment. I'd like to try a stripper, but probably will go S&G for my first attempt. If I decide to go S&G, I am looking at Redfish designs.
Before I bought the Eskia, I tried a Necky Looksha IV, which was too low in the foredeck and made me sit with my legs folded out to the sides.
I am also planning to build this outside under a "tent" made of bisquene plastic. Am hoping this will have enough greenhouse effect to heat up for epoxy cure during the winter.
If you all would care to post suggestions for kayaks to build or to tell me I really need to find a garage or something, please do so!
Looking fwd to getting started, but worried I might not like the finished boat! That would suck. If anyone knows of an upcoming rendevous or lives near Eastern NC where I might try various boats, let me know!
ALSO, I am looking for a consistent source of wood for carving GPs. I called Newfound Woodworks today, they are asking $45 for an 8ft clear Alaskan Yellow Cedar 6/4 board. Plus about $20+ for shipping. That's pretty expensive I thought, does anyone know of a supplier I might try for less? Doesn't have to be AYC wood. Can be East coast varieties. I just can't find suitable consistent stock around here in the "big box" stores. Laminating a blank from Lowe's scantlings costs about $25-$30 but is too heavy for mass appeal.
Thanks!
