: I saw one in the parking lot yesterday,,,damn it looks like it would be a
: fast/easy paddling boat for a light person. Any feedback?
Hi Lee- I built a SS a couple of years ago. I reduced the volume a slight bit and dropped the back of the cockpit coaming for easier rolling. The boat is absolutley beautiful with exceptionally elegant lines. The SS paddles well, is very manuverable and very forgiving. As far as speed is concerned, it is fast for it's length. It is unfair to compare it to a longer boat as far as top speed is concerned. The bow does throw a bit of spray which makes for a bit of a wet ride, but not bad by any means. I have never built a boat that could not be "improved". That being said, I would like to see a little bit more "V" midships and smoother transition from fine Baidarka bow to a full entry aft of that. This is nit picking, as I think Rob did an exceptional job on the design.
I have "given" the boat to my wife. It fits her perfectly and she LOVES it. When we paddle together I get to admire both of their lines. I still paddle my Outer Island most of the time which is longer and a little bit faster. I would not hesitate building one of these beauties for a minute. Her are some photos.
