I just wanted to say thanks for the suggestions about moving my kayak. I ended up getting some shrink wrap from a local marina (Home Depot wouldn't sell me any), which was $28 for a 20ft long 14 ft wide sheet. More than enough to securely wrap the kayak. I "gently" used a propane torch to shrink and seal the plastic. And now 1200 miles and two days later, my kayak has survived the trip with no problems (and no burn marks).
