Ok...that's not too bad....though I would feel pretty bad about it if it happened to me. I have been crunching my boat on stumps, rocks, and trees lately. Your repairs should be exactly as you indicate...cut the strips out in a stepped fashion. Carefully choose strips for match and color. You might have to use strips thicker than the original, because it's sometimes hard to curve short pieces exactly like you want them, and sand to fair. Sand the fiberglass back several inches around the patch making sure you are sanding to consolidated, clear laminate so you won't get a halo. Preparation is a key. At this time you can experiment on a seperate assembly of strips with tinting your seal coat for color before applying it to the boat. On a patch like this I usually use two layers of cloth...one following just inside the contours of the patch and the next overlapping onto the original laminate. Just do the best you can. Where the damage is would make it hard to incorporate some pattern to hide it. It will probably be visible, but it's possible to make it almost disappear. Again...just do the best you can. The patch will be a testament of how strong you kayak is. At the end you can simply lop it off in a pleasing manner and add whatever material you want for integrity and looks.
