: When building a strip-built kayak, what are the most expensive aspects of the
: project. I am planning on cutting and milling my own strips, and I am
: doing my own lofting as well (I am not purchasing any plans) Without these
: two major costs, what are the most expensive things? Also, where is the
: best place to get epoxy/resin or fiberglass? Thanks for responding.
I suppose it depends on where you are too. In Central Florida the cedar was the most expensive item I purchased for my boat. After that epoxy then the fiberglass. If you have the wood available and are willing to make fixed foot rests and a cheap seat you can probably have a very inexpensive yet beautiful kayak when you finish. Around $300 or there abouts.
Of course you can't forget the hidden costs like sand paper, foam roller, brushes and those tools you didn't own before you started. Bead & cove bits, low angle block plane. And the replacment for the sander you just burned up.

Do it anyway and have fun.
