Borrowed tools? Ask your father. All kidding aside, if it's an older drawknife from a better maker (L&IJ White, Witherby ...) a file won't touch it. Use a DMT diamond hone, or a good stone. Follow the established bevel. Keep the back flat and don't round over the edge.

You might take a look at the Oldtools listserve archive and search on drawknife and sharpening.
