Has anybody used kevlar felt for a skid plat on a kayak? This is a non-woven material usually cut in a tear drop shape, saturated with epoxy, and stuck to the bow and/or stern of canoes to reduce wear when launching and landing. The felt does not become clear when wet out (ref. johnrsweet.com).
I am not very happy with the epoxy/graphite/cabosil treatment I have on my Arctic Tern 14. Over the course of the summer I added layers when I found scratches deep enough to let water get to the plywood. When I was finally satisfied that the boat was protected from deep scratches I had added about 10 pounds to the weight of the kayak! On the positive side- I am able to get a super slick racing finish by sanding to 1600 grit.
I am looking for a better solution for the S&G NH I just started. The kevlar felt is only 3 oz/yd so I could do the whole football!
