Chris, on my first boat I had to scarf strips together I took care not to match up the colors and it really added to the look of the boat. Also, if you dont want to scarf the strips on the boat scarf the ends of the boards together. Like someone said earlier, it is harder to work with a 17-18' plank though. You could always use rollers to help feed the wood.

If you are looking for better quality wood you need to find a specialty lumber store. Sometimes you can find great WRC at a spa store. They use WRC to make the walls in saunas a lot...
