Strip: Staining the wood

Where I live I cannot get darker colored woods (like Mahogany) for any reasonable price. I would like to have a few darker strips to make some patterns and thought about staining them before applying the glass. Are there any reasons why you cannot stain the strips? Has anyone done this before?
