Good luck with your CLC LT17.

The simple hip brace will give you more support and also reinforce the cockpit area nicely. You should be able to stand on the coaming if the hip brace is installed correctly.

If you want more flotation consider combining a wrap-around rear bulkhead with a hip brace. You will not waste as much foam, and you will get much more flotation. I am doing this with my Coho. In fact the rear bulkhead wraps around almost to my knees. The dark vertical piece of wood is the original hip brace.
