Kyle, Dale & others,

Thanks for the helpful insights. Whacking the forms with a hammer scares me too.

My thinking now is to be a glue minimalist and also remove most of it as I build out the deck, as Kyle suggests. Might also try the builder's string idea. Mostly I glue the underside of the strips to the SIDE edge of the forms, so chipping it off isn't hard.
