On my Wee Lassie, I took three strips and glued them together. After the glue dried I took the resulting 3/4 by 3/4 " strip and ran it back across the table saw. This produced two 1/4" by 3/4" strips with three pin stripes. The outer two where lighter colors and the center one was the same color as the rest of the hull. This link goes to a okay picture of the results.
