Hi, Chas

As a first timer, I started with a S&G to learn the how-to's and what-not-to-do's. The S&G was easy to build and easy to correct when I made errors. I have no experience with strippers BUT I am getting the Night Heron stripper plans for my birthday, next week. S&G teaches you what you can do, strippers add the extra challenge of more detailed wood work. I'm taking a risk by attempting to build a stripper (because I know myself) but I HAVE to do it, just because.

I started with a Waters Dancing Kit, the Lightning 17. I chose it because I wasn't sure about cutting my own panels because I know I'm not a careful wood cutter. The Waters Dancing kit was perfectly cut (computer driven router cuts panels to fit flawlessly) and with the very detailed and well written instruction book, it was a great way to launch myself intothe wooden boat building addiction. I wanted the Lightning 17 because it has a high storage capacity yet is very fast on the water and tracks quite well while still remaining reasonably well maneuverable. I am currently using it to paddle across Canada on a trip that will take me almost 3500 kms, possibly over 7000 kms before it's over.

I push Waters Dancing because I don't know any of the other boat companies. I do know by other people's comments that Waters Dancing is one of the best in the world, priced right for a kit and you get quick delivery and excellent advice when you need it.

If you feel you can cut your own panels, then buy the plans. I'm betting Nick's Night Heron S&G will be a great choice. If you want a kit, then try a Waters Dancing, you can't go wrong with it. Donnie (owner of WD) has many excellent choices for a yak. I've been in his Solace 18EX, Lightning 14 and Solace 16XL. If you're up for a stripper, then Nick has many excellent choices, you just have to decide what kind of paddling you want to do.

I hope this helps.
