Some people would say "vastly more oppressive" laws. What works extremely
well for big US corporations doesn't actually do that much for very small
businesses who want to protect their IP, while seriously stifling innovation
that could make those small businesses bigger...

One reaction to oppressive but ineffective copyright laws is, as you suggest,
to make new designs that are better - stay ahead of the competition. This is
exactly what happens in the software world, where new designs evolve much
quicker through an open source model, producing vastly superior products to
the old corporate dinosaurs who only survive through oppressive lock-in
mechanisms. The strip-build kayak world certainly doesn't have that sort
of problem ! If you want to see really brilliant kayak designs you should
publish your designs under something like the Gnu General Public License
so others could make subtle changes and contribute the results back to the
community. Like the open source software world, there would still be a
business model selling accurately printed plans, kits, documentation and
support for these continually evolving designs.
