Rob,
I'm sure cloning your father's old boat is a noble endevor but the method you have in mind is not a slam dunk.
So far at least 4 others in the last year have inquired about doing a fabric/resin hull and to date nobody has come back to say,"it works",it doesn't work", "here's a picture it's finished/in progress", etc.
Any fabric,'glass, Kevlar, carbon, graphite, reqires extreme percision to do a usable hull lay-up. If the end product is wrinkled, wavey, lumpy, whatever, you do not have the luxury of sanding down the high spots and filling in the low spots unless they are very minute. If you sand into the fabric you're weakening the hull. If you fill the low spots your piling on weight in a hurry. The lay-up has to be close to perfect right off the mold or it's a waste of time.
Kevlar, as wonderful as it is, is almost impossible to control if you sand or cut into it. Once a yellow fuzz is raised it is near impossible to eliminate.
If you'd like a blow by blow read "Building Your Kevlar Canoe" by Moore available wherever boating books are sold.
By the way, if you're thinking of doing a female mold that makes the process even more difficult. The pro's do it that way but they have the luxury of laying in gel-coat which keeps the fabric away from the outer surface. The gel-coat is thick enough to allow a bit of touch -up if small surface defects show up.

: I have a vintage 1960's fiberglass Giak (cross between a canoe and a kayak).
: But it is showing its age and is quite heavy (100#). Some of this is due
: to having been repaired several times (my dad cut it in half to bring on
: the plane how from Canada). It is a two piece construction (top and bottom
: hulls) screwed together.
: I was thinking of mold and then lining it with kevlar and glass. Any
: suggestions on a better way? I plan to make two more for my brothers. Or
: anyone know someone who would do this for me?
