People build kayaks out of luan doorskins and a lot of other stuff too. The reason that many choose Certified Okoume is quality. BS 1088 (and I don't know the specifics of the standards) means that you won't find voids in the interior of the sheet and that you won't find patches on the faces. These can be important factors for boatbuilders. The lack of voids means better strength and even bending. The unpatched faces are important if you intend to leave the boat "bright." BS1088 is a certification of a certain level of quality that generally exceeds what we need for kayak building.
