I had trouble finding cheap cedar and when I did I had wound up with 8' and 4'planks (partly due to transporting the wood and the size of my shop). I just used my belt sander to scarf joints and found it easy to join strips to build a 14' kayak. Having shorter strips and a joint in the middle made it easier to fit many of the strips.
