Along the same lines, if you can get cedar cheap you might want to think about building a small canoe first to hone your skills, then "move up" to a kayak. I'm just finishing up a Wee Lassie from the "featherweight boatbuilding" book. Spent less than $200 total, and used right at $100 of materials to build it. I've made many mistakes, including not mixing the epoxy properly for the first coat.. I'm STILL fixing that one... but when I build my next boat , I'll have the proper skills, and this is a great little boat. At 165lbs you can actually enjoy the thing me thinks, the one I'm building will mainly be used by my wife, or one of my daughters.
