I just got done applying a duck onlay to the bow (one on each side) of one of Pygmy Osprey-Standard I am building. One of the inlays was made with paper back veneers and the other was made with veneers without a paper back. I did sand the paper on the back of the veneers, a little, before applying it to the hull that had a saturation coat applied.
I didn’t save trouble with either inlay. I guess that time will tell if one is any better than the other.
I had covered the inlay with clear packing tape before applying it. I applied epoxy to both the inlay and to the hull before setting it on the hull. I cover the whole thing with a piece of plastic wrap. Then added a freezer bag filed with sand and added a couple of bricks on top of that, for weight.
I plan on adding a eagle inlay to the deck of the Osprey I am building.
Hope this helps. Good Luck.

I will try to post a photo.
: I am doing alittle planning ahead in the building of my tandom S&G. I would
: like to add some wood veneer art work to the deck. One of the local wood
: work supply stores here in Portland, OR has a nice supply of different
: veneers, BUT they are all paper backed. Even with the paper, they are very
: thin.
: My question is: does anyone think I will have a problem using a paper backed
: veneer (glued under a glass layer) or should I try to find veneer without
: a paper backing?
: Thanks,
: Gary
