Okume Veneer, etc.

Patsy -
He did it himself. First he put a piece of 2" wide blue masking tape on a piece of 4mm Okume plywood about 4" long so he had a 2"x4" piece of plywood with tape on it. Then starting on the back side he progressively chiseled and then fine sanded the back 2 plys away until all he had was the top ply with the "show" face stuck to the tape for a backing. He then sanded a taper to each edge of the veneer while still stuck to the tape. After cutting a fine notch into the scarfed panel where the veneer would go, he used CA glue (that's cyanoacrylate, not California!) to stick it to the scarfed panel. He and I held it down with our strong little finger tips until dry, then voila!!, peeled off the tape and there you have it! I think Dave took some photos so maybe he can post them when he gets a chance.

BTW, the whole San Diego area is pretty shook up with the fires and all. They're still burning out of control in the east part of the county. Today, the winds are supposed to turn around and begin blowing off the ocean again but instead of the normal afternoon sea breezes they're being driven by a strong low pressure system over the desert so they're going to be fanning the flames hard in the other direction, towards the mountains - UGGHH!! This is officially the biggest fire in California history as of this morning and it's been estimated to be only 15% contained so far. 250,000 acres, 1000 homes, and counting. And that's just in San Diego County. There's bad ones up in San Bernardino County as well. We all know people who've lost everyting. Sobering.

: I'd love to see before, during and after photos of your putting okoume veneer
: over the joints. I thought about doing that but didn't and would love to
: see what and how you did it and how it came out. Where did you find the
: veneer or did you make it yourself?
