I live in Los Osos. I would have been at that race, but a nephew had the gall to get married that weekend in Long Beach. I paddle a Chesapeake 17, and I'm presently building a Guillemot for my wife. A buddy of mine in Los Osos has built two Pygmies (I'm not sure which, but one is a 14 footer he built for his son.)
There are tons of closed deck kayakers on Morro Bay regularly, but the rental shops cater to out-of-towners who aren't regular yakkers. Plastic sit-on-tops make much more sense.
I think of Morro Bay as more of a tourist town than a fishing village. While I'm not a fisherman, I read articles in the paper all the time about how they've closed down fisheries due to depletion of resources.
It's a great place to have a kayak. The bay is beautiful, and there are plenty of suitable places to paddle on the ocean. Come visit. Maybe I'll see you out on the bay, or over at the Sand Spit.
