: I live in Los Osos. I would have been at that race, but a nephew had the gall
: to get married that weekend in Long Beach. I paddle a Chesapeake 17, and
: I'm presently building a Guillemot for my wife. A buddy of mine in Los
: Osos has built two Pygmies (I'm not sure which, but one is a 14 footer he
: built for his son.)
: There are tons of closed deck kayakers on Morro Bay regularly, but the rental
: shops cater to out-of-towners who aren't regular yakkers. Plastic
: sit-on-tops make much more sense.
: I think of Morro Bay as more of a tourist town than a fishing village. While
: I'm not a fisherman, I read articles in the paper all the time about how
: they've closed down fisheries due to depletion of resources.
: It's a great place to have a kayak. The bay is beautiful, and there are
: plenty of suitable places to paddle on the ocean. Come visit. Maybe I'll
: see you out on the bay, or over at the Sand Spit.
Hey Gordon
Had you been in that race, you'd have probably won.
Sorry I missed ya... but I'll be back in that area hopefully in six weeks, depending on my next vacation... and if I can get it off... ( Holiday/New years time... ?? ) For us Postal Employees, that's a tough time to get free...
My friends are beginners and if I can find out when they will be over next, maybe I can send them in your direction.. They will be getting their Cape Horns in about 3 weeks..
My impression of Morro Bay is approximately the same.... I think it WAS a fishing town in the not so distant past, but it's more of a tourist trap now... just not on the caliber of Monterey/Santa Cruz. Still small enough to be friendly and homey. As a deepsea fisherman I was over there a lot until the fire that took out my favorite boats and outfit... Been going to Monterey since.
Guess we just missed all the regular kayakers there.. I only saw two or maybe three aside from rentals... But it was terribly hot that weekend, so...??
We never did get to the Sand Spit, which was our secondary objective, just that my buddies boat lost a rudder pedal and he didn't want to get to far from home... If you see an middle-aged couple ( mid 50's ) paddling a Gray and an Orange Cape Horn, you may want to stop and say howdy... pretty nice folks and interested in learning...
Might just see you there...
