Matt:
Thanks for the kind words. We had a lot of fun building the boat and my daugther still loves paddling it. She took it in to her 2nd grade class last week for "Sharing time" because they were supposed to bring in something they made. There were more than a few popped eyes in the classroom.
: A few questions: - Is the kayak light enough that your daughter can carry it
: herself?
Yes. It is 15 lbs. fully loaded.
: - Did you use WRC for the keelson and stringers as well as the gunwales?
Yes. It is cheap and available where we are at (Portland, OR)
: - How tippy is that boat w/o the outriggers (I guess it doesn't matter, but
: I'm curious if that is something that I care about given that the boat I'm
: going to build for my son will probably never be paddled w/o outriggers)?
It takes some getting used to. She still uses the outriggers, but mostly because she likes to goof around a lot in the boat. John Doornink's son, Andrew, has paddled it several times without outriggers. One modification I had to make was to make wider outriggers (5 feet instead of 3 feet). With the wider outriggers, it is pretty bombproof.
Regards,
Marcel
