: does anyone have pictures of a fully rigged guillemot?
There's lot of ways to rig your bungies and deck lines, depending on
what you want to do with the boat, what sort of waters you will be
paddling, even the size of group you might find yourself in. My
rationale is to have bungies to hold a chart on the foredeck, straps
for those hatches that work that way, bungies to hold split paddle
aft, along with a small deck bag for flares and vhf radio and a towline
bag. Deck lines around the perimeter so more people can carry the one
boat - paddling in parties of six or more, you can get much reduced
back pain if all of you carry each boat up the beach :-)
Here's two examples:
Geyrfugl is a child's kayak, with flush hatches held down by webbing
straps and fastex buckles. Sarah wouldn't normally carry a big
deck load - the aft bungies are fine for either a split paddle, or a
hydration bag, but probably not both. The forward bungies hold a
map, though the cockpit opening is quite big, putting the map rather
far forward and a bit hard to read.
An alternative to this for large cockpit openings is to have a spraydeck
with clips for a chart, and a waterporrof chart case designed to fit that.
This is what my wife has on her commercial Romany LV, which has a huge
keyhole cockpit.
Piqqalujamik takujumavunga is my playboat, with a VCP hatch forward and
a bulkhead hatch aft, so no straps or bungies for that. She is good for short
trips of up to 3-4 days on the sea, but not for big expeditions or big seas !
The cockpit is small, so the chart bungies on the foredeck make the map
easy to read. I usually have a GPS under these bungies too - but I no
longer have a camera clipped here - a PFD pocket is much more convenient.
The aft rigging is minimalist - I carry a deck bag and a towline
just behind the cockpit, but usually manage to get someone else to have the
split paddle. Alternatively, if I paddle solo on sheltered water, I carry a
split aft, and don't need accessible flares/radio or towline. This boat has
a retractable skeg, so it easy enough to compensate for changing the windage
caused by varying deck loads.
