: I don't get it, I must be missin somethin. How can using carbon fiber fabric
: make a boat lighter when the CF is the same weight as fiberglass? I
: understand that it is stronger, and I could understand using 3oz CF in
: place of 6oz fiberglass to save weight. But I can't find any CF less than
: 5.5oz! So wuts up wi da?
You are right about the weight. So you use carbon fiber in places where you would normally use two layers of glass to get a desired strength (such as inside of a cockpit). There you only need use one layer of carbon fiber. That's half the weight in that area. That's how I used it. It wouldn't be economical to use CF any place where one layer of glass has sufficient strength.
Another place where you would need multiple layers of glass would be some coaming styles. Here a couple of layers of carbon will save you from several additional layers of glass. Hatch flanges are another place.
