Thinking ahead for once ;-)

The instruction book for my Merganser 16 says that prior to applying an inlay, the exterior should be sealed and lightly sanded.

I am wondering if sealing and sanding only an area slightly larger than the outline of the inlaid item would suffice. I don't mind if there's a "halo effect" around my inlay. Any problems with this approach?
