I had something like this too, though not as nice as the one pictured, but I had to be aware of what ever might drip off the boat...some wood glue drips found their way to my strips...it was a canoe I was building then, and there weren't strips under the workspace when I was glassing. A piece of plastic or newspaper worked once I realized I had a potential problem. Rather than seperate the kinds of wood, I went through and picked what matched and set it on the side of the boat where I thought I might use it...it ended up being kind of confusing though. The strip pattern I was making wasn't very elaborate either, so it really didn't matter.
