Hi Bruce
I made one of those awhile back,and it had a fair bit of play.I could feel the looseness when paddling. I added pads of foam to the wings which were larger than the wings. The foam pads acually just ride on the hull. The brace is more secure now and it still slides OK on the rail.
You could re-make the slider assembly with closer tolerances but even with epoxy coating the sliding action wears on the pieces. I think that foam on wood is better than wood on wood.

Hope this helps. Let us know how you make out.I think this type of brace is very comfortable and if some of these wrinkles can be ironed out even better!
