Hi Paul,

Below are the numbers presented in the 11/2002 Sail Magazine article written by Dave Gerr (excluding the e-glass/mat/olyester figures):

Tensile strength (PSI) for CF, S-glass, and E-glass respectively, all using epoxy:
61,000 71,000 46,000

Modulus (E) psi:
7,300,000 3,200,000 2,800,000

Strain in/in:
.0084 .0222 .0164

Modulus of resilience (u) in. lb./cu. in.
255 788 378

Seeing those numbers only helped me a little. It was Gerr's accompanying commentary that made is so much more clear. My objectives are to build a relatively light kayak that is still tough and durable. Those are rather subjective words, I know. Based on my test samples, if I were to use the commonly available 6 oz CF on the inside of my hull, the boat would not meet my weight objectives. The extra stiffness provided by CF is not necessary, and the reduced "resiliency" is not desirable in the unlikely event I were to crash heavily into a large pointy rock.

Hope this helps,
Ted
