I never tried it, but some dinghy sailing racers and RC sailboat racers claimed it made a difference. I 'll bet a lot of this falls into the hundreths of a second category. If you're looking for speed, the coating won't matter until the surface is very smooth and your technique is very smooth, too. I'll bet taking your hull down to 1200 then buffing made a huge difference. You pretty much removed all the scratches.
